Chance the Rapper makes history as the first unsigned artist to win a Grammy (3 of them!)
Chance the Rapper has walked away with three Grammys from the 59th Annual Grammy Awards - scooping up best new artist, best rap album (beating out his mentor Kanye) and best rap performance.
In previous years, the 23-year-old wouldn't have even been considered by the Recording Academy. Recordings had to be commercially sold, and Chance has built his career entirely on streaming websites, releasing his music for free.
Chance famously referenced the Grammy sitch in his guest verse on Kanye West's "Ultralight Beam" ("I hear you gotta sell it to snatch the Grammy").
However, the Academy is moving with the times.. and has relaxed its eligibility criteria. About time.
Congrats Chance! The man is paving the way for massive change in the music industry.

He took the audience to church so to speak, with a chilling performance of "How Great" and "All We Got," two tunes from his Colouring Book album, spitting his rap over the top of gospel vocals from Kirk Franklin and Tamela Mann, before a full choir and band joined the trio.
