Unhappy with your life? Delete your Facebook account

Could deleting your Facebook account be the answer?

According to a recent research study by Utah Valley University, people who do not use facebook are much happier.

As reported in the Daily Mail, Ninety-five percent of people used Facebook, and on average they had been there for two and a half years and spent nearly five hours a week on it.

After allowing for gender, religiosity and whether people were single or attached, the study found that 'the more hours people spent on Facebook, the stronger was their agreement that others were happier'.

Those who had used Facebook for longer were also 'significantly' likely to agree with the statement that  'life is unfair'.

Conversely, the study - published in the journal Cyberpsychology, Behaviour and Social Networking – found that people who spent more time actually socialising with friends in the flesh were less likely to feel they had been handed life's short straw.

Just realised I sadly agree - as each year passes my 'real, in the flesh' social interaction with 'friends' diminishes just a little bit more - rather than impromptu catch ups with friends, just lots of msgs/chats promising to meet up soon, and 2 years later I realise some of those plans still haven't eventuated due to my work/family/facebook update commitments... and now with android even phone calls and texts are dwindling. Where previously I would have the urge to call a mate to see how life is treating them, a quick stalk of their profile, scan of their status updates (wow, new hair colour, new tan, new job, new man - all good...) seems sufficient. Who has a free hour to spend on the phone these days when in less than 2 minutes "Yo Girl, looking good, catch up soon, love ya xmwahx.... can be typed?? But if you don't actually leave a comment, or hit a like/poke button they would never even know that someone was thinking of them and hoping they were doing ok. yes, i was happier pre facebook when every 2nd day I was having girly wine catch ups, ladies lunching, hour long bitch sessions on the phone... I think something that intended to bring us together has actually started to create some very lonely people. Could I delete facebook?? hell no, and miss out on seeing all the status updates and photos of people having a real life?? not likely, but I think I have just convinced myself to make a few phone calls today...

I totally agree - although in my case, while I use Facebook a lot, I'm fairly happy and don't think many people have it better... The issue is that people can't control themselves on Facebook and Twitter, and use it as a dumping ground for every emotion they feel. Rather than learning to control their emotion they use social media as a platform for cussing the world. Once those people learn to use the sites positively it'll be a much nicer virtual world out there...
