Wikipedia starts 24-hour blackout in protest of US anti-piracy proposals

Wikipedia started a 24-hour blackout of its English-language articles, joining other sites (such as Google & Reddit.com) in a protest of pending US legislation aimed at shutting down sites that share pirated movies and other content.

The internet companies are concerned that the Stop Online Piracy Act in the House and the Protect Intellectual Property Act under consideration in the Senate, if passed, could be used to target legitimate sites where users share content.

The 24-hour blackout of Wikipedia was a decision reached after a vote was taken from its community of contributors.

You can bypass the blackout on Wikipedia by either disabling your Javascript or viewing the mobile site through your cellphone.
