Retail giant Walmart has been forced to apologise for selling a range of Christmas sweaters which feature an illustrated Santa about do illegal drugs.

Now removed from the Walmart Canada website, the jumpers show Saint Nicholas sitting with wide pupils at a table racked with lines of white powder. Emblazoned under him is the caption: "let it snow".

Santa also appears to be holding some sort of pipe or straw as a snorting device.

Before they were removed from the 'Ugly Sweaters' section on the Walmart Canada website, the product's description read: "We all know how snow works".

"It's white, powdery and the best snow comes straight from South America. That's bad news for jolly old St Nick, who lives far away in the North Pole.

"That's why Santa really likes to savour the moment when he get his hands on some quality, grade A, Colombian snow."

A spokesperson for Walmart told Global News the sweaters were made by a third-party seller, and have been deleted from the site.

"[They] do not represent Walmart's values and have no place on our website."

Other items reportedly still available to purchase on Walmart's Canadian site include a jumper depicting a mugshot of Santa Claus and a Chanukah sweatshirt designed with a menorah and captioned with the slogan: "Lit."
