While New Zealand is busy with a referendum to legalise cannabis, the American city of Denver have made massive strides towards decriminalising another drug.
A measure just passed to decriminalize psilocybin mushrooms, more commonly known as “magic” mushrooms, in the city of Denver, which is in the state of Colorado where cannabis was legalised in 2014.
Initiative 301 allows possession or use of magic mushrooms by individuals who are at least 21. The idea behind the initiative is to keep users out of jail, with Decriminalize Denver campaign manager Kevin Matthews saying “No one deserves to go to jail and lose their family, their livelihood, their jobs for something that has a therapeutic benefit,” ahead of the vote.
According to the tally released earlier this week, the measure passed by just under 2000 votes and will be finalized on May 16.
No telling whether any other cities will follow suit as of yet, but it's definitely a step!
