The things people do for a durry...

Thieves have smashed through a window and taken thousands of dollars worth of cigarettes and tobacco from an Otago supermarket, sparking a regional search.

The early-morning incident took place at a Four Square in Port Chalmers near Dunedin at about 2am on Thursday.

Police are investigating whether the theft is linked to an incident at a nearby BP on Tuesday morning, where two thieves stole $7000 worth of cigarette and tobacco products.

Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen said it appeared the products were "being stolen to order," urged store owners to remain vigilant and said if anyone was offered cheap cigarettes they should call the police.
