US$3.2M worth of marijuana sold in Illinois the day it became legal

Way to start the year on a high...

Illinois residents are already taking advantage of the legalisation of recreational marijuana, buying US$3.2 million dollars worth of it on the first day alone.

The new law came into effect on New Year's Day allowing punters to legally purchase the drug for recreational use without a prescription from state-approved dispensaries if you're aged 21 or older.

The legislation could also clear the records of those previously arrested for using weed.

We will be re-evaluating our own stance on the drug later in the year with the 2020 New Zealand cannabis referendum.

Footage circulating online showed just how crazy the lines were on New Year's Day with punters keen to get their hands on the green.
