Africa is actually splitting in half?

If the fate of the earth wasn't already scary enough, we've got something else that might just make you feel a little more uneasy.

A section of Eastern Africa has decided to say lataz to the rest of the continent and it has begun splitting off the whole land mass. The split is called a geological rift and is happening at an alarming rate.

Now, the whole thing is not just gonna fall off and be a new continent tommorrow, but it's worth mentioning that when geologists say 'quick' they mean a few million years quicker.

Though, in that sense, the situation doesn't seem so dire, the split has already caused major problems throughout  Eastern Africa. Check out this massive CRACK in Kenya?

The Great Rift splits Africa into two plates. With what is happening we have established one plate which is the Somali plate is moving away from the other plate at a rate of 2.5cm.

So, basically the plates are moving apart a few millimetres a year... which in a million years will mean the plates will be a few kilometres a part.

Dayum.
