Today, Vice New Zealand with the help of New Zealand On Air have released a harrowing documentary on the dangers of synthentic cannibis in NZ. The documentary comes as the third installment of the Vice series 'Zealandia'.
The documentary, 'Syn City', goes inside the lives of West Aucklanders affected by the highly addictive and gravely dangerous drug known on the streets as ‘synnies.’ In particular, ex-addict Tamara is followed as she grapples her recovery after a six-year battle with synthetic drugs.
Up until 2014, the sale of synthetic cannabis in New Zealand was considered a global test case for legalised drugs. With the introduction of tighter controls, the synthetics market has gone underground, and the harm to the community has spiralled. At least 25 people are believed to have died from synthetic drug use in 2017.
Last Friday we spoke to James Borrowdale, a producer from the documentary, on the doco itself and even Tammy's own experience with syntehtics.
