Is this the NZ hip-hop album of the year right here?
Melodownz (AKA Bronson Price) dropped his debut EP Avontales on Friday, July 7th.
We've been hyping up for this release since we heard the album's first single 'The Anthem' back in April.
Bronson is first and foremost a story teller. His lyrics are unbelievably strong. So, from start to finish this album is a journey, giving an honest and often gritty perspective of life in Avondale.
Personal highlights include 'One More', Melodownz's latest single featuring Israel Starr. On this track Melodownz puts his samples aside and picks up Starr's smooth live instrumentation, with catchy vocals, and tight lyrics about a rough patch Bronson experienced with the lady of his life, this is a must listen.
I'm also a big fan of '8ight 2wenty 8ight' one of the grittier raps off the EP with a banger of a beat.
And '2 sides of 1 coin', with The Grow Room's Dusty Melody on production, this darker tune tells a story of a desperate man's struggles; he robs a house and ends up assaulting a pregnant women, then the song flips perspectives and tells the same story from the women's view.
Vibe out to Avontales below.
This is the first official solo music release from Melodownz (AKA Bronson Price) since his 10-track LP Beginners Luck, which he dropped back in 2014.
And yes, it might have been three years since his last solo release, but don't take that to mean Bronson hasn't been going hard on the grind.
As one half of YGB's Third3ye, Bronson dropped 3P with Angelo King last year.
Not to mention his unbelivably strong feature game, which has lead Melodownz to become one of the frontmen of the NZ hip-hop scene, right now.
His 2016 tune 'Pull Up' with keytar king K+lab is a funk anthem.
Bronson has also recently collaborated with a number of friends of George FM, including the Ammonation crew, Yoko Zuna, MC Tali and The Grow Room collective.
And his new single 'Lips' with Noah Slee is an absolute chuuuune. Slee's been hailed by some as NZ's answer to Flume... And just two weeks after its release, 'Lips' has already racked up 100,000 views on Majestics' YouTube channel.
Bronson's friendly, open-hearted nature is a huge part of his appeal. He's single-handedly banded together some of the biggest heavy weights in NZ hip-hop for this latest project - Making Avontales a true celebration of our fire hip-hop scene.
In the Bandcamp write up he sends shout outs out to every one who was part of this project:
"Rizvàn for the engineering, mix and master.
Baccyard, LightskinJon, Shask, Dusty Melody, Ben Jamin', David D'angelo for the beats /production.
Israel Starr for the instrumentation and smooth vocals,
Bailey Wiley, Yaynè and Tayla Gillard for the additional vocals.
Lapis for additional guitar.
