New Zealander of the Year Mike King gave George Breakfast a call this morning to chat about the inaugural edition of Gumboot Friday.
The mental health initiative encourages Kiwis to pull on a pair of gumboots and bring a gold coin donation to school or work to help fund counselling sessions for kids that need it.
King's organisation - mental health charity I AM HOPE - are behind the fundraiser and have a target of $2 million.
The gumboot aspect is derived from a metaphor for depression, where those struggling with it can "feel like walking through mud every day."
