You need to watch Charli XCX's gender role-flipping music video for her hit 'Boys'

Featuring the likes of Diplo, Flume, Stormzy, Joey Bada$$, Matt DeMarco, D.R.A.M, Denzel Curry and G-Eazy, Charli XCX's new, self-directed music video for her single 'Boys' has the viral potential of 'Hotline Bling.'

I just want to flip the male gaze on its head and have you guys do the sexy stuff.

It's already racked up 9 million views within the first few days of the release.

The video communicates an alternative view on masculinity, taking a step away from the macho, pussy-money-weed loving man we've become accostomed to expect in
mainstream music videos (and media at large).

Essentially, all the ridiculous shit you usually see women doing in music videos, the guys are doing instead.

I.e: throwing confetti, looking longingly into the camera, giggling for no apparent reason, having a sexy dance, rocking a wet t-shirt, eating candy and then licking their fingers, cuddling puppies, lying in piles of rose petals...

Standard.

Not one to discriminate, Charli XCX has used males of all races, body types and styles.

She explained her concept behind the clip in an interview with BBC Radio 1.

“They’re basically doing all the sexy things that girls usually do in videos,” she said. “I started thinking about all the guys that I’ve worked with or met [throughout all] my years in the industry... I just want to flip the male gaze on its head and have you guys do the sexy stuff.”

Props Charli.
