An Ashburton dog has hit headlines after finding a new chew toy during a routine Sunday walk.

Ashburton woman Lissa Cross was walking her four-year-old dog Huni when the pup stumbled across a large dildo and quickly became attached.

"'Houston we have a problem'," Cross wrote on Facebook. "The dog found herself a new chew toy at the river and refuses to give it up!! How the hell do I make her understand this one and seriously WTF Ashburton."

Post attachments show Huni chewing the new toy and eventually trying to bury it. It reportedly took Lissa an hour to separate Huni and the toy.

Cross revealed in an interview with the New Zealand Herald that the sex toy can still be found in the tree line to the left of the entrance onto the riverbed at Alford Forest Rd if the owner wants to snag it!
