Underplayed, Kiwi-born director Stacey Lee’s debut film is now available for purchase online to celebrate International Women’s Day. The film highlights the struggles that female artists go through when trying to make it into the male-dominated electronic music industry.
The documentary features interviews with the likes of Alison Wonderland, Rezz, Nervo and Tygapaw and dives into the struggles they go through in order to be on the mainstage. Alison Wonderland opened up about how her rise to fame as a solo artist was difficult and led to dark thoughts, depression and panic attacks.
Despite the hardships that Underplayed uncovers, it’s a must-watch for lovers of EDM. This documentary is incredibly inspiring.
Stacey Lee told Billboard,
“It was important to translate who they were on screen in a real way because I don't think you often see that with female artists. I want them to be aspirational. I want young girls to be like, ‘That could be me.’”.
