Kiwi golfer Daniel Hillier turned into Daniel Him-ier in the final rounds of the British Masters, taking home the trophy and loads of sweet, sweet moolah
Daniel will undoubtedly be shouting the next round of beers with his mates, as the 24-year-old took home a juicy £468,000 (NZ$969,000) after finishing ten under par to win by a bumhole clenching two shots.
Holes 15, 16, and 17 were magical for Daniel and secured him the victory. He was three or four shots behind the top spot before going fourth-quarter Michael Jordan mode, hitting eagle-birdie-eagle before going par on the final hole.
The man himself is struggling to fathom how insane his final stretch was.
“I’m gobsmacked,” he said. “I think it’s going to take me a while to process to be honest.”
"Early on in the day, I was not feeling it at all. I was a little bit uncomfortable with the driver, didn't have many chances but obviously knew there were some chances coming in.”
"I didn't think I would take them that well, but I'm obviously pretty ecstatic. I'm not going to lie, I was definitely looking at the leaderboard and seeing my name up there and thinking about what it would be like to finish it off, but it's all a bit of a blur really."
"I felt pretty good over the final putt - I felt as comfortable as you can over a putt of that magnitude and I just had to tell myself to put a good stroke on it."
Daniel is the first New Zealander to win the British Masters since Kiwi golfing legend Sir Bob Charles won it over fifty years ago in 1972.
“That’s pretty amazing,” the young gun said. “Obviously, he’s New Zealand’s golfing hero so it’s pretty cool to be on the same trophy as him.”
It’s been a stellar year for Kiwi golfers. In February, Lydia Ko won the Armaco Saudi Ladies International in Saudia Arabia. One month later Danny Lee took home NZ$6.3 million for winning a round of LIV Golf.
With all that money going round I'm willing to bet the local driving range is going to be PACKED for the foreseeable future.
