The hunt is on for the most incredible burger in Wellington and the creations are out the gate

There's a hot cheetos burger.

Our capital city is known for its appreciation of the finer things in life, and that rings so very true when Wellington on a Plate’s burger competition comes around.

Almost every eatery in Welly enters a favourite or brand-new burger into the competition, which takes place over a couple of weeks. Every year there is a theme and 2023’s is ‘Breaking The Mould’. And break the mould they did.

There are over 200 hectic and delicious burgers on offer - so many that it's tough to choose a few to show off. We're gonna present some of the more out-there creations for your viewing pleasure, but don’t worry if you like to play it safe - there are plenty of classic chicken and beef burgers, all done to an impeccable standard.

From mac and cheese fillings to scone buns to pretty much pizzas, this one hectic list of burgers.

Relatively tame but looking absolutely delicious is Concord Bistro & Bar’s ‘Le Poulet Rebel’ burger. It’s a buffalo chicken burger with celery, carrots, and Kingsmead cheese but it’s got some crunchy yet delicate-looking potato chips that set it apart from your average shmo chicken burger.

If you hate the size and shape of a standard burger, Welly on a Plate has plenty of towering burgers and even a couple that barely classify as a burger in my book. Jardin Grill offers ‘The Fat Jack’ which is most definitely an ironic name, because that thing is much more ‘Tall Paul’.

Loretta’s ‘The Flatty Patty’ is a brisket burger but in the form of a pizza. Like I said, options.

Keeping on the pizza train, The Tote’s ‘Pizza Me Baby’ burger has a bun that’s literally a miniature deep-dish pizza.

If you can’t decide between some cheeky snacking or a proper burger meal, The Realm has a burger with Flamin’ Hot Cheetos in it. ‘Crown on Fire’ exchanges burger buns for locally made bread, and also comes with hot sauce on the side.

There are purple, green, blue, black, waffle, bagel, lemon, fish, and even scone buns on offer. Dr Suess’ legacy lives on.

There are hundreds of burgers I didn’t mention that are fat, juicy, skinny, fishy, long, extravagant, simple - whatever adjective you can think of I’d bet there’s a burger that it could be applied to.

You can check out the full list here. The actual competition runs from the 11th to the 27th of August, so if you’re craving tf out of a burger right now, get ready to get to Welly.
