Tiki Taane on his 'stompy' remake of te reo classic 'AEIOU' for Waiata Anthems

“I wanted to something that was a little more 2022 vibes and also feature some amazing vocalists.”

Waiata Anthems Week starts on September the 5th, and 26 new waiata dropped today to kick it off.

The George Breakfast team talked to one of the goats of Aoteroa music, the one and only Tiki Taane, who remade the classic tune AEIOU.

The song first came out more than three decades ago and Tiki said he had to redo the song from scratch, hitting up some Kiwi artists to help him out.

“That classic came out in 1991 and I got the call up to do a remake,” he said. “That’s 31 years old you know. There were no original files back then so I had to remake the whole thing myself.”

“I wanted to something that was a little more 2022 vibes and also feature some amazing vocalists,” he said.

“I called in some amazing artists - Ria Hall, Georgia Lines, Mazbou Q, Chey Milne - and just kind of made a wee stompy thing,” he continued.

“Georgia Lines, she did an incredible job. Mazbou Q, it was his first time ever rapping in te reo Māori so big ups to him.”

Over 25 of Aotearoa’s most talented musicians released some new tunes becoming reo champions for the 2022 Waiata Anthems movement.

Co-founder of the Waita Anthems, Dave Hinewehi Mohi said that the movement is a way to celebrate the language and the progress Aoteroa has made in reinvigorating the language throughout the country.

"The week is an opportunity to celebrate how far the revitalisation of te reo Māori has come, its importance and relevance now, and for the future."

“It’s been incredible to see the music industry band together to create and produce these beautiful waiata. With the support of mātanga reo, the artists have created 26 waiata from the heart, for the nation," he said in a press release.
