‘Kei runga koutou!’: Fred Again’s use of te reo Māori sends Auckland Spark Arena crowd wild

Ka rawe Fred!

Fred Again played at Spark Arena last night and the 12,000 people in attendance all fell in love with him.

His ability to connect with the crowd goes beyond his incredible music and DJing, evidenced by him using Te Reo to get the crowd nice and ready at the start of his show.

On the massive screen behind him, the crowd read both the English and Te Reo translations of Fred’s message, saying that everyone there is “the fucking best” ("kei runga kotou!") - (little spelling slip up - should be *koutou but big ups for the love!).

“Mai i te taenga tuatahi mai ki konei i tērā Hānuere (Ever since we came back her for the first time in January),” it read. “I whakarritea e mātou kia hoki mai ai (We've been planning how we want to come back).”

One of the other highlights of the night was when Fred brought Kiwi DJ Messie and her friends on stage with him. She opened for him at his Coroglen gig on Monday night and was so impressive that Fred invited her to do it again for an overseas show.

However, Messie didn’t have a passport so Fred pleaded to parliament to sort one out for her and they got it done in under 12 hours. Maria Robertson, the Deputy Chief Executive of Internal Affairs, sorted it out after her son told her what was happening.

Once more, Fred has proved himself as one of the most wholesome artists alive and that the hype around him is about so much more than just the sick as tunes he puts together.
