Scarlett Johannson kicks ass in the offical trailer for Ghost in the Shell

Our first look at the cyberpunk-manga-turned-Hollywood-blockbuster is here.
Controversially starring Scarlett Johannson as The Major and filmed in our very own Wellington, this film looks trippy af.
It's based on the manga created by Masamune Shirow, which was already adapted into a 1995 animated film with a massive cult following.
The story follows The Major, who is a human-cyborg construct and the head of an elite task force called Section 9 fighting against the criminal underworld.

The film is directed by Rupert Sanders and also stars Pilou Asbæk, Takeshi Kitano, Chin Han, Michael Pitt and Juliette Binoche.

However despite all the scandal around Johansson being cast as a Japanese character, if the trailer's any indication Paramount and DreamWorks pictures haven't done much to counter the "whitewashed" stigma the film has been branded with.

Ghost in the Shell
arrives here in New Zealand in late March, 2017.
