Tinder is about to offer criminal background checks

Tinder users can now run criminal background checks on their matches

Tinder is about to make spotting red flags a hell of a lot easier by introducing the option of running a criminal background check on whoever you swipe right on.

The dating app has partnered with non-profit background check provider Garbo, which searches public records of arrests, convictions and sex offender registries.

An update will see a new background check feature integrated into Tinder’s safety centre, which allows two free searches before charging US$2.50 per search. Garbo typically only requires a first name and a phone number to get started, but info like age and even zodiac sign can help narrow things down.

The downsides? There’s a couple. The service only runs in the US right now, and we don’t think there’s any company that will check if your date is into baby talk or still texting their ex.

Plus, there are all kinds of bad eggs out there who probably haven’t had a run-in with the law, but when it comes to weeding out the weirdos, we’ll take what we can get.
